Average ring size
US 6 for women and US 9 for men. Those are the figures every jeweller quotes, and they are worth rather less than they look.
Every other number on this site is computed from a published standard. These two are not, because no standard governs them and no primary source exists. What that means in practice is set out below — no other page answering this question tells you.
Average ring size for women
The commonly cited average is US 6 — an inner diameter of 16.51 mm, a circumference of 51.87 mm, and UK L½ or EU 52.
Most women who buy rings fall between about US 4 and US 8½, which is 14.9 to 18.5 mm — a span of roughly 4 mm of finger.
Average ring size for men
The commonly cited average is US 9 — an inner diameter of 18.95 mm, a circumference of 59.53 mm, and UK R½ or EU 60.
The typical band runs about US 8 to US 13 — 18.1 to 22.2 mm. It is wider than the women's band, and men's bands are also more often wide-profile, which makes a ring fit tighter at the same nominal size.

Where these numbers come from
Ring sizes themselves are standardised. ISO 8653 defines the EU scale, JIS S 4700 defines Japan’s, BS EN 28653 defines the UK letters. Every size on this site is computed from one of those. The average is not.
We went looking for a primary source in August 2026 and did not find one. What exists is jewellers publishing their own sales figures, and other pages repeating them. The attribution you see most often is to the Gemological Institute of America, but the pages citing it cite each other rather than a publication, and the supporting details — a database of ten thousand customers, a quarter of American women wearing a six — are not checkable by anyone outside the company making the claim.
There has never been a census of finger sizes. What these figures actually describe iswhat jewellers stock and sell — ring buyers, not people. Engagement rings skew the sample young and female; wedding bands skew it differently again. A size 3 and a size 14 are both entirely ordinary.
We print them anyway, because the question gets asked constantly and refusing to answer helps nobody. But they are a rough central tendency from retail, not a measurement, and nothing on this page rounds to a decimal place they could support.
How much the average tells you
Less than the number of digits suggests. One full US size is 0.81 mm of diameter — about the thickness of a stack of ten sheets of paper. The whole women’s band from US 4 to US 8½ spans a finger difference you could cover with a fingernail.
So US 7 is not a large ring for a woman: it is one size above the commonest, and two below the commonest men’s. US 6 is not small. Both sit in the middle of what every jeweller keeps in stock. If you came here to find out whether your size is unusual, it almost certainly is not.
If you are buying without asking
This is why most people search for the average, and it is the case it serves worst. Buying US 6 for someone whose size you do not know is a coin flip on a ring that has to be resized — which is possible for most plain bands and impossible for eternity rings and some tension settings.
